LAND AND ATMOSPHERE REMOTE SENSING GROUP (LARS)
The UPV researcher Luis Guanter, head of the LARS research group has won The International Champions of the Frontiers Planet Prize 2023. His research focuses on the development of methods for the space-based monitoring of bio/geophysical variables of the biosphere to reduce methane emissions worldwide.
The university needs water for its day-to-day running, and it is their responsibility to implement the necessary measures for its rational and efficient use, as well as for an adequate management of the resource. At the same time, they play an important role in DEGREE PROGRAMS and research on water issues and in the development of more democratic and equitable management models.

The ocean plays a fundamental role in the Earth’s habitability. It provides resources such as rain, drinking water, climate, coastlines and much of our food supply. It also regulates the supply of oxygen in the air. The university must develop and transfer knowledge that contributes to the sustainable use of marine resources.

Environmental Management System Review Report
Life on land, along with life below water (SDG 14), food sources (SDG 2), and health and well-being (SDG 3) provide work for millions of people, especially linked to the rural world (SDG 8). Land ecosystems are very vulnerable to pollution and climate change (SDG 13). Their health—and therefore our health as well—directly depend on a more sustainable production and consumption model (SDG 12).
Universities must work toward a sustainable environmental management of their green spaces, protecting their biodiversity and improving their ecological conditions.
Likewise, they must contribute to the general preservation of life on land by educating thousands of students in environmental disciplines, research and knowledge transfer.
